We are currently doing the Qualitative Research Methods with Dr. Jyothsna Beliappa. As part of the class, we are visiting a school which is working with the students from the economically backward section.
So yesterday was the second time I visited the school. The first day was all about introduction. So starting from yesterday we stared the first task of observing the students. Part of our work involved jotting down observations, asking questions and interacting with the students while simultaneously thinking for our research proposal.
Before going into the details of what I observed, I will first share the proposal. This is meant for the students in grade 9th and 11th.
' What is the role of education in their life?'
It is a two fold question. The first question is what do the student understand by the term education(in comparison to literacy)?
The second being how they feel education affects their life, for better or worse.
The reason behind getting into this question is because what I have noticed in the school is that the students are literally mugging up the answers and not indulging in any kind of thinking. They don't ask the 'whys' and most of them have a submissive attitude in front of the teachers.
This brings me to multiple questions. What are the reasons that lead to the type of instruction flow between the teacher and students? How does the student deal with it, specially those who are not able to fully grasp the lessons? How does it affect the morale of the student?
Also, how do the students utilize the content and technique in their life. Does it give them a certain kind of mental/ financial edge? These are among the many questions I have in mind. As I am still in the initial phase, I do realize that a lot of homework needs to be done before I can start working with the students.
In my next blog, I will give an overview into some interesting observations I made while in school.

What you seem to be talking of is the banking model of edcuation (Friere) which is being followed by the school. But this is a very big research question. You should make it something more specific.
E.g. It could be something on the lines of "What are the popular methods of instruction in the school? How effective are they in deep learning? What do the instructional methods teach children about the value of education?" what I have outlined is not ideal but I hope it will help you think through your research question and make it more tangible.
